EARTH DAY: CLEAN UP THE CLUTTER
By Jennifer Alexander Ruple, The Buzz Book Magazine
April 22 is Earth Day. Be part of the celebration and declutter your home by purging, recycling or donating items that are no longer needed. Whether you choose to tackle a little or a lot, every effort can make a significant difference and leave your home feeling fresher and recharged. Here are five areas of the home that could benefit from a good clean-out.
Kitchen Cabinets – Check expiration dates and throw away food products that have expired. Recycle any packaging that’s appropriate. Consider donating extra canned meats, fruits, vegetables, pasta, peanut butter and pet food to a local agency such as Sylvania Area Family Services, www.sa-fs.org, or the Toledo Northwestern Ohio Food Bank, www.toledofoodbank.org. As long as items are unopened and unexpired, they can be put to good use for area families in need.
Closets – Sorting through bedroom and coat closets for items that haven’t been worn in a while or simply don’t fit, can make a huge impact on available space. While this task may seem overwhelming, make it easier by tackling one closet at a time. Decide what items are keepers and donate the rest to a nearby thrift shop or Goodwill Donation Center, www.goodwill.org.
Home Office – Paperwork can build up over the years. Look for local shred day events, usually offered in the spring, or contact a local UPS Store, www.theupsstore.com. Magazines, newspapers and junk mail can be disposed of in curbside recycling bins or taken to public drop-off centers located at area Kroger stores, ww
www.kroger.com.
Medicine Cabinet – Check the medicine cabinet and bathroom drawers for unused or expired medications. Contact your local pharmacy or www.cvs.com for safe medication disposal kiosks and drug deactivation packets.
Garage – For hard to dispose of items including paint, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, holiday lights, pesticides, cleaning chemicals, and electronic waste such as computers, keyboards and cell phones, both Lucas and Wood Counties offer recycling and disposal
programs for residents for free or a small fee. For Lucas County, visit www.co.lucas.oh.us, and for Wood County, visit www.recyclewoodcounty.org.

Waste Not, Want Not Aromatherapy
By Rosy Glow Wellness Therapies
So many of us are using essential oils in our daily wellness routines, which means mostly empty bottles of single essential oils or blends hanging around. But don’t pitch them – recycle those bottles for sure, but meanwhile – reuse! Take your different singles, blend them, and use them on your dryer balls for natural laundry scent. Or, add your citrus oils to cleaning products for a natural clean.

Join The 2024 Plant Exchange
By Tahree Lane
“Defiance is the mettle that defines both gardener and nature”, according to Henry Mitchell.
A long-time garden columnist for the Washington Post until his 1993 death, Mitchell knew there are no green thumbs, only people who are in for the long haul.
Regardless of thumb color, all are invited to two free plant giveaways, where friendly (and defiant) gardeners will share flora of all stripes, as well as tools, paraphernalia, and advice.
The Wood County (April 27) and Toledo (May 4) plant exchanges will accept and give away all things garden as they’ve done for many a year.
Everyone attending will receive tickets for a few free plants, and those who bring healthy plants will receive more. Plants must be healthy, weed-free, labeled, and in a pot, box, or bag.
Volunteer gardeners will sort some 1,000 items into sensible groups as well as do their best to answer questions. See hostas, daylilies, ornamental grasses, ground cover, bulbs, seed packets, saplings, and tropical beauties such as cannas. Also included are raspberries, vegetable starts, houseplants, herbs, tools, iris, and native Ohio plants which attract native pollinators. Invasive plants are not accepted.
How to know which plants to select? Watch the sun’s movement across the sky. Then track how long the sun shines directly on each of your plots:
• 6+ hours per day = Full sun
• 3-6 hours = Light shade
• Less than 3 hours = Shade
Wood County Plant Exchange is held at the Wood County Fairgrounds, 13800 W. Poe Road, Bowling Green, beginning with plant drop-off at 8:30am. At 10am, the public is admitted to shop on a first-come, first-served basis. Drivers should proceed slowly, and volunteers will help unload vehicles. For information, call 419-354-9050 or visit Facebook.
Toledo Plant Exchange is held at the Lucas County Fairgrounds, 2901 Key Street, Maumee. Plant drop-off begins at 8:30am. Shopping starts at 10am and ends by 10:45 am. For information, call 419-213-4254 or visit Facebook.

Upcycle Furniture
Hutchison Fine Furniture
Reupholstering furniture is a brilliant choice to reduce, reuse, and renew, especially when it involves cherished family heirlooms, furniture with frames that complement your style, or pieces with unique shapes. Reupholstering not only honors the past but also aligns with eco-friendly practices. It’s often most cost-effective for chairs but can be for sofas too. This approach to furniture not only saves money but also preserves stories and personal connections, making your home a true reflection of sustainability and style.

MakerSpace Events
Heart Gallery and Studios Gallery will host several MakerSpace and Lunch events inspired by the Japanese art form “kintsugi” where gold is used to repair broken ceramic pieces, highlighting the break rather than hiding it.
Looking through a “kintsugi lens” we see a correlation between our role in the environment, our relationships with others, and our reaction to personal trauma or loss. People, like pottery, can be broken, but with healing, can emerge stronger and renewed.
