Objectivity the holy grail of every aspiring journalist when I learned the craft has been a lost goal. It pains me to witness the stream of negativity overwhelming daily accounts of the day’s activities.
Yet I watch and listen—news having been part of my daily life for enough years that it’s tough to let go. And it’s not that I’m unaware of the discord that marks world events. However, on an evening not too long ago the stream of woes put me over the edge. Flipping around the kazillion channels at my disposal I was stopped cold by a glimpse of Mother Teresa.
Compelling beyond measure was the film and commentary by this little Bulgarian nun who became the face of Calcutta. The program went between flashes of her at work among the destitute and dying and her state funeral attended by dignitaries from around the globe.
Immediately stilled, I listened to her gentle explanation of what is important in life. As she cradled a malnourished child, her aura of peace was stunning. The interviewer asked whether she is ever overwhelmed by all the need surrounding her. She said simply one does what one can. One person can indeed change the tide. Maybe the one is us.
