Bee Like Wooden

John Wooden is known as one of the greatest athletic coaches of all time. His teams knew how to win, and he knew something about the good life. When he was 12 years old, his father gave him a piece of paper on which were written seven principles for life. Motivational speaker Pat Williams wrote a book on Wooden’s seven principles and believes living them can change your life. They are:

  1. Be true to yourself.
  2. Make each day your masterpiece.
  3. Help others.
  4. Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible.
  5. Make friendship a fine art.
  6. Build a shelter against a rainy day by the life you live.
  7. Give thanks for your blessings and pray for guidance every day.

Wooden kept the piece of paper in his pocket his entire life and faithfully followed his father’s principles to motivate himself and his players. He knew he only had one life, and he wanted to make it a good one. As he always told his teams, “If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?”
